Finned Tubes

What Are the Different Kinds Of Finned Tubes?

At Turnbull & Scott we have the experience and manufacturing capability to make numerous types of finned tube. The main differences occur from the choice of manufacturing process and metal combinations.

Plate fin tubes (or baseboard) are manufactured by a process of stamping tube size holes in a metal strip. A tube or tubes are then inserted through the hole in a large number of plates. An expander is then fired through the tube such that the tube diameter expands and forms a strong bond with the plate and collar  The collar is created during the stamping process such that the distance between the plates (the pitch) can be predetermined as part of the design process. This pitch, or density of plates over tube length, will be a major influence on the thermal efficiency of the heat exchanger. Plate fin tubes are particularly suited towards mixed metals as there is no welding involved. Most commonly we use copper/aluminum as this is the optimum metal mix to achieve the greatest thermal transfer efficiency.

Spirally Wound Steel Gilled Tube is more suited to more robust metals where stamping and expender bullets may be ineffective. Thus Gilled Tube provides the perfect all-purpose extended surface Heat Transfer medium of great strength to withstand all nominal system temperatures and pressures. Our special purpose gilling machines wind a metal strip onto the tube in a continuous spiral under considerable tension. Again the fin height and pitch can be determined in the design stage such that almost any temperature transfer can be achieved within any dimensional restriction..The gilling process results in a perfect mechanical bond with excellent heat transfer from tube to fin using the most robust of steel or stainless steel combinations. This allows us to produce finned tubes, and subsequently heat exchangers which can operate at exceptionally high temperatures and in the harshest of environments.
