GKV Plant

Simpsons Malt are the largest independent family owned malting company in the UK with annual output
of approx. 249,500 tonnes of malt across 2 sites. To meet an ever growing demand for it’s product Simpsons decided to increase the capacity of it’s Malting plant at Berwick upon Tweed.

As a result, 4 new GKV plants and a 20 MW kiln were built to make Tweed Valley Maltings the largest single site in Europe. The state of the art malting equipment is designed to germinate and dry the grain in situ to produce malt to meet their client’s expectations. 

Being a trusted contractor for many years, Turnbull & Scott were commissioned to provide the mechanical services for the new equipment including:
 

1. 1700 metres of 50mm NB Galvanised water pipework
   
2. 60 metres of 150mm NB Gas pipework 
   
3. Stainless steel pump manifold
4. 40 metres of 100mm NB Stainless steel
   process pipework
   

The total value of the project was £100K and was delivered on time and to budget.

Following the completion of the project, Pat Richards, Chief Engineer for Simpsons Malt quoted  “Turnbull &
