Boiler in a Box?

When Manchester University was planning the build of a new boiler house the inconvenience of a construction project on a busy campus was proving quite a headache. When BIB Cochrans, the boiler manufacturer, suggested a Containerised Boiler house the client was amazed the hear that such a large Boiler house could be fabricated off site and delivered as a complete solution, ready to 'plug and play'.

Fortunately BIB Cochrans knew just the people to tak to on such an engineering challenge. Turnbull and Scott (Engineers) Ltd. have been designing Containerised Boiler houses and plant rooms for over a decade. These are required in a variety of instances, typically

  • Where intenal space is at a premium and siting the boiler house/plant room externally frees up vital real estate, (eg care homes, hotels etc).
  • Where a major on-site construction project would be overly disruptive (eg hospitals, universities etc).
  • Where a biomass boiler system is being installed as an additional rather than replacement systems and fuel such as woodchip requires to be loaded from outside the building.

The Manchester University boiler house was challenging as it was larger than the normal project. Measuring over 4m in height and with an area of 650 sq ft. Turnbull & Scott staff installed

  • 2 X BIB Cochran Little Cheiftan 1.4 Mw gas fired steam boilers.

  • A 5,000 ltr stainless steel insulated hotwell tank manufactured by Turnbull & Scott.

  • An automatic blowdown system with a 1,000 ltr blowdown vessel.
