Seventeen year old second year apprentice Liam Gibson won the trip of a lifetime, Liam won a ten day trip to Nasa Space Camp in Houston Texas last november . Over the visit Liam got a tour of the Johnston Space Center , see a Rocket Launch, watch Apollo 13 the Movie and listen to an addresses by guest speaker Mr. Fred Haise who himself is an engineer and former NASA astronaut and is one of only 24 people to have flown to the moon. The activities ranged from star gazing, looking for alligators , tour of the Johnson space centre, had a talk on building tomorrows rockets, to a Geek night and a gala dinner on the night before leaving Houston. Liam didn’t have much time for shopping or sending post cards, but he had a truly enjoyable experience even with a busy schedule for ten days. He did manage to play a game of football against the NASA young astronauts and told us in the office that the Scottish boys won the game we are still waiting to see the proof. Here are some of Liams photos of his trip. Just before the trip the company made this statement to the press.
“This is a great achievement for Liam and we are very proud of him. We have a commitment to recruiting apprentices in Hawick and currently have four at various stages of the programme. I hope Liam’s success encourages more youngsters to look at careers in engineering, particularly in energy engineering” Managing Director Peter Murphy said. “Of course we would all love to go to Houston with him, but this is his prize and we hope he enjoys the experience.”
The four winning Modern Apprentices were chosen by a panel comprising Scottish Engineering and Skills Development Scotland from a number of engineering apprentices taking part in a competition for 1st year Engineering Modern Apprentices. The Modern Apprentices have already completed their first years training with their training provider and their company.
