Dedicated to the learning and development of our staff

By now, John Wallace who joined us from Cochran Boilers had become the owner of T8S. He built a relationship with the engineering firm Mather & Platt who owned the Thermolier products company.

Throughout our history there has been a big emphasis on the learning and development of our staff. This was no different in the 1980s and is epitomized by the fact that our very own Jim Davidson joined the company in 1983 through a youth training scheme placement shortly before his 17th birthday. In Christmas 1983 he was offered an apprenticeship and started a full-time engineering course at college thereafter. 40 years later and Jim is still an integral part of our team. Jim has fond memories of learning his early trade at the hands of John Wallace.

During the late 1980’s Jim started learning to estimate, as well as drawing, which ended his “shop floor” career. Turnbull & Scott attained ISO9000 registration during this time which became Jim’s responsibility.

Jim recalled travell all over the country on projects in paper mills, salt plants, aircraft companies and of course nuclear plants. He stated, “It’s the variety of what we do and manufacture which keeps the interest”.

Turnbull & Scott in action

This striking coloured pencil piece from the 1980s captures a vivid snapshot of the day-to-day life at Turnbull & Scott, Dominated by a bold, company signature orange backdrop, the painting features a meticulously detailed array of finned tubes, Themoliers, and heat exchangers, key products of the era. At the bottom, the intensity of a welder at work is beautifully contrasted by the tranquil scene of a staff member engrossed in paperwork on the top. This industrial tapestry is a testament to the hard work, dedication. And artistic vision that defined Turnbull & Scott’s operation at the time.
