Types of Coils in Heat Recovery from Flue/Exhaust Gases

Gas-to-liquid type heat recovery coils

In gas-to-liquid type coils, the heat captured from the flue/exhaust gas is used to heat water for different applications. Below are some examples of scenarios were this is done and how it works:

  • Industrial Dryer Flue heat is transferred to process water
    • Heat from industrial dryer exhaust flues is transferred to pre-heat process water
    • Heat recovery coil located in dryer flue - hot gas circulating around tubes and fins of coil exterior transferring heat to water circulating inside tubes – warmed water pumped and piped to paper pulping machine.
  • Industrial Boiler Flue heat is transferred to boiler feedwater
    • Heat from boiler exhaust gas is transferred to boiler feedwater. A gas-to-liquid type coil used in this application is often referred to as ‘an economiser’.
    • Heat recovery coil is located in boiler exhaust flue - hot gas circulating around tubes and fins of coil exterior transferring heat to water circulating inside tubes – warmed water is pumped and piped to boiler feedwater tank.
  • Industrial Boiler Flue heat is transferred to a building’s space heating system
    • Heat from boiler exhaust gas transferred to building’s space heating system
    • Heat recovery coil is located in boiler exhaust flue - hot gas circulating around tubes and fins of coil exterior transferring heat to water circulating inside tubes – warmed water pumped and piped to hot water storage tanks or directly fed to unit heaters to heat factory/warehouse/office space.
